VIDEO: The Orbán Cabinet would like to postpone the 2026 elections – Here is the government’s reaction

Bence Tordai, an MP from the opposition party Párbeszéd – Dialogue for Hungary, shared a video claiming that the Orbán cabinet would organize a referendum to postpone the 2026 general elections. According to the video, such a move is necessary because the opposition is being financed from abroad. Therefore, organizing a fair election is impossible. Here is how Gergely Gulyás, the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, reacted to the content.
2026 elections will be in April or May
According to Telex, the video in question was fabricated by AI, while the Hungarian government denied such plans in a laconic statement, writing, “This is nonsense.” Gergely Gulyás told the press at a press conference yesterday that the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office will file a police report in connection with a video claiming that the 2026 general election will be delayed.
The date of the election is regulated by the constitution and does not allow for it to be delayed under any circumstances, he said, adding that when the election is held had nothing to do with the government’s emergency powers or the war in Ukraine.
The election is set to be held next April or May on the date to be announced by the president, he said. Meanwhile, he said a law abolishing limits on campaign spending passed by parliament on Tuesday had been necessary because there were no such limits in either the European Parliament or local council elections, adding that it was “just about impossible to keep track of or limit” online political ads.
He said neither ruling Fidesz’s nor the Christian Democrats’ parliamentary group would submit amendment proposals concerning the rules of procedure or funding for elections before next year’s vote.
