Gál and Dróth secure draw for Hungary in Romania

Goals from István Gál and Zoltán Droth brought Hungary back from 2-0 down in their European Championship qualifying play-off first leg against Romania in Buzau and secured a 2-2 draw ahead of next Tuesday’s second leg in Debrecen.

Hungary had conceded two goals in as many minutes, one from Al-Iaoni and another from veteran Robert Metei, but Gál and Dróth incredibly scored their goals in the next two minutes before Richárd Dávid nearly snatched a winner, but his shot cannoned off the woodwork.

Hungary were put under heavy pressure in the final minutes but some good saves from goalkeeper Gyula Tóth ensured parity at the halfway point of this tie and the knowledge that any type of win for Hungary in the return leg in Debrecen next week will safeguard progress to the finals tournament proper in Belgrade next year.

Sito Rivera, Hungary had coach:
I feel this is a good result for us and that my players played until the very end with extraordinary motivation. In the first half we relied a lot on our defence and in the second half we conceded two goals early on but we succeeded in following this with a full recovery within two minutes, after which we needed Gyula Tóth and a stable defence in order to achieve this result. We played against a strong, more experienced Romania team so I am happy we can thank our two goals away from home for this good position going into the second leg.
