Free public access to Lake Balaton shores endangered by govt subsidy cuts

Budapest, June 16 (MTI) – Free public access to the shores of Lake Balaton is likely to become a thing of the past now that the government has decided to reduce a state supplement to the local council tourism tax, the opposition Dialogue for Hungary (PM) said on Thursday.

Bence Tordai, a spokesman for the party, noted at a press conference that parliament has approved an amendment to the budget which reduces the state supplement paid to local councils by one third.

Local councils will have to cut spending and some have already proposed charging entrance to beaches, the party said, adding that every Hungarian should have free access to natural waters in the summer.
