Foreign Minister in Prague: Refugee quota system no solution to crisis

Prague, September 21 (MTI) – The European Union “is dreaming” if it thinks a mandatory refugee quota system will solve its migration crisis, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in Prague on Monday.

Szijjarto spoke on the sidelines of an emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of the Visegrad Four (V4) countries, which was also attended by Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, whose country holds the EU’s rotating presidency.

“The real solution would be the EU regaining control over its own borders,” Szijjarto said.

“The quota system is unenforceable, the conditions for its implementation are not there,” he added.

Earlier this month, the V4 countries rejected the quota system. The aim of today’s meeting is for the countries to discuss their views on the crisis ahead of Wednesday’s emergency EU summit.

Szijjarto said the key to the protection of Europe’s borders is Greece, a country which he says needs to be strengthened so it can protect its frontiers.

He called on the EU to provide financial, military and technological support for Greece. He said Europe needs to be ready for an even larger flow of migrants in the future.

Szijjarto said Hungary is in a difficult position in the migrant crisis because “two other EU member states deliberately and demonstratively violate EU laws”. The minister said Greece “is incapable of protecting its borders” while Croatia “floods Hungary with thousands of migrants without registering them”.
