Was your flight delayed or cancelled? Here are Budapest Airport’s reasons for the current disruptions

European airspace is facing widespread delays, not just in Budapest: this issue was addressed by the Deputy CEO of Communications and Government Relations at Budapest Airport during an interview on state TV channel M1.
Katalin ValentĂnyi noted that the main cause of these delays is the heavy congestion in European skies, worsened by the summer travel rush, major sporting events like the UEFA European Championship, and the upcoming Paris Olympics, 24.hu writes. Additionally, the conflict in Ukraine has complicated matters, as flights can no longer pass over Ukraine or Russia, leading to rerouting that predominantly affects Hungarian airspace.

Weather conditions also play a significant role in these delays, ValentĂnyi noted. Thunderstorms can disrupt ground operations at airports, and severe weather can prevent planes from taking off. The Deputy CEO mentioned that the airport has set up “assistance points” at terminals A and B to provide passengers with all necessary information – read details HERE.

When asked for advice, she warned that these issues are likely to continue until the end of September, so travellers should be prepared for a summer filled with delays at European airports.
In light of these delays, National Economy Minister Márton Nagy has called a meeting with the head of HungaroControl, the agency in charge of air traffic management, to discuss the situation.
