First female President of Hungary listed among female world leaders who have a law degree

The number of women Prime Ministers and Presidents across the world who have studied law has increased to 15, out of the total current 32, with the election of Katalin Novák as the president of Hungary, who at the same time is the first woman President in the history of this country.

She puts Hungary on the list of the world’s countries that have a female head of state, either as a prime minister or president. Novák holds a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Szeged, Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, which is the most common degree of the current female leaders as another 14 women in the two key leading positions worldwide hold such degree.

After law, the 2nd most common degrees of current women world leaders are politics and politics-related degrees like international relations and public administration.

Erudera.com, the world’s first education search platform backed by Artificial Intelligence, has conducted a study on the most common degrees of the current female leaders and it has also found that only 29 world countries have a female Prime Minister and/or President and 15 of the women leaders are at the head of a country located in the continent of Europe.

According to Erudera’s education expert, Donjeta Pllana, there is no other research up to date that has tended to focus on the current female world leaders and their educational background with the purpose of coming to such a conclusion.

“Even though almost half of women leaders hold a degree in law, it still is not research-proved that a student who studies law is more likely to become a Prime Minister or President. Yet, our study shows that such a degree is enormously helpful in understanding the system, and that is why people who complete their studies in this field have an advantage to those studying other fields, in particular to those studying natural sciences,” Pllana explains.

According to the findings of the study:

  • Number of countries in the world that have ever had a female head of state or government has never been higher than in 2022.
  • A 72.2% increase of female world leaders compared to 2010 when only 18 women served as head of state or/and government.
  • Only 3 out of 31 current female leaders have a PhD degree.
  • 7 world countries have had more than 3 female leaders in their history.
  • In spite that the number of women leaders is higher now compared to earlier years and women made it to power, the list is still relatively short and data collected by Erudera shows that 128 countries out of 231 have never had a woman leader.
  • Since 2015, 23 countries have elected their first-ever female head of state including here the following 9 European countries: Serbia, Slovakia, Estonia, Greece, Moldova, Lithuania, Georgia, Sweden, and Hungary.
  • Two of the states that currently have both a female Prime Minister and President are Moldova and Barbados.
  • 7 African countries currently have a female head of state.
