Fidesz MEPs laud Hungarian results in Romania municipal elections

The EP group of Hungary’s allied ruling Fidesz and Christian Democratic parties has congratulated Transylvanian Hungarians on the results achieved in Romania’s municipal elections last Sunday.

In a statement issued on Monday, they called the outcome of the ballot “a historic success”.

Out of the candidates of ethnic Hungarian RMDSZ, a total of 199 were elected mayors.

Candidates of the Transylvanian Hungarian Alliance (EMSZ) were elected mayors in ten localities and another three independent candidates backed by EMSZ also became mayors.

The city of Targu Mures (Marosvásárhely) also has an ethnic Hungarian mayor.

The Fidesz-KDNP MEPs said that they will consistently stand up for the individual and collective rights of Hungarians beyond the border, working closely with the parties representing Hungarian communities.
