Fidesz MEP: Mandatory migrant quotas still on Brussels’ agenda

The issue of mandatory migrant settlement quotas is still on the agenda of Brussels, an MEP of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party said on Thursday.

Hungarian voters have made clear their rejection of migrants, and the Hungarian government enshrined this view in the constitution, Tamás Deutsch noted. “Brussels is trying to change Hungary’s constitutional framework,” Deutsch said in a recorded statement.

He said the moment the Hungarian government announced its National Consultation public survey, Brussels launched “an attack” against Hungary, criticising a question on migration.

Now Brussels plans to adopt an EU law on mandatory quotas and wants to press Hungary to change its domestic laws, including its constitution, he said.

He said liberal EP parties, including Hungary’s Momentum, were promoting a plan backed by the financier George Soros dubbed Renew Europe which, he insisted, would turn Europe into a continent of immigrants.

Fidesz and Christian Democrat MEPs will defend the position of the “overwhelming majority” of Hungarians, he said.

“This is why we are asking Hungarians an important question: should the government stick to its guns on maintaining the constitution’s provision rejecting immigration, even if this means open conflict with Brussels,” he said.
