European collaboration only way out of crisis, says European Socialist leader

Budapest, September 14 (MTI) – Problems caused by migration cannot be solved by walls and barbed wire but only through European collaboration, the president of the European Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats said.
Speaking at a press conference held in Roszke, on Hungary’s border with Serbia, on Monday, Gianni Pittella said the first thing that would lead to a solution would be to distribute 160,000 migrants among member states.
There is also a need for permanent and binding laws for asylum-seekers, he said, adding that every means possible should be used to fight against people smuggling. It is necessary to stabilise crisis zones, especially Libya and Syria, thereby eliminating the need for refugees to set off in the first place, he added.
Addressing the same news conference, Istvan Ujhelyi, an MEP for the Hungarian Socialists, said he was very proud of the work of volunteers and civil organisations, especially in Szeged, in southern Hungary, over the past weeks. He said he had been organising visits for MEPs so as to “show them that Hungary is not just about the policies of Viktor Orban, but it also has a face of solidarity”.
