Did Hungary pay for Orbán’s speech on the Dallas CPAC?
The Dallas CPAC this weekend was an important milestone in the 2024 Trump campaign. Uniquely, the event was opened by the keynote speech of the Hungarian prime minister this Thursday evening. But did the Hungarian state pay a big amount for that?
As we reported, PM Viktor Orbán gave the keynote speech at this year’s CPAC in Dallas. The event ended with Trump’s almost 2-hour-long speech yesterday. On Friday, an opposition MP, Ákos Hadházy, wrote that Orbán’s audience was thin since most of the chairs were empty while the Hungarian prime minister spoke. Hadházy said that Orbán’s speech was like an old rock star’s performance, who returns for the 4th time on stage for a last “show”. However, nobody listens to his music anymore.
PM Orbán reacted on his Facebook page on Saturday. He said that there were many listening to his speech and they did not give a damn what the leftist media wrote.

In connection to Orbán’s CPAC speech, hvg.hu wanted to know how much the Hungarian state or government paid for it. Bertalan Havasi, the press chief of Orbán, said the amount was zero. “The Hungarian state did not pay for it and asked nothing in return”, he added.
However, HVG writes that the Hungarian Alapjogokért Központ (Centre for Fundamental Rights, CFR) is one of the sponsors of the CPAC. That organisation received HUF 2 billion (EUR 5.08 million) from Hungary this year, which is almost its entire budget. HVG wanted to know what the financial support of the CFR covered but received no answers yet. They also asked the main organiser of the CPAC, the American Conservative Union (ACU), whether they knew that one of their sponsors received a lot of money from another state. However, they have not reacted so far.
