Crowds queueing for charity food in Hungary: people struggle
On all three days of Christmas, the Food for Life Charity Foundation (Ételt az Életért AlapÃtvány) held a food distribution for the people in need in front of the Planetarium building in Népliget. More and more people were queueing for food, as was the case on Saturday and Sunday. Those arrived could take home a hot lunch, fresh baked goods, hot tea, Indian sweets, fruit and a food gift bag with nearly 20 items.
This year again, the Food for Life Foundation has organised a food distribution for the people in need. More and more people are queueing up, the wristbands are running out fast and the people in need can take home a hot lunch, fresh baked goods, hot tea, Indian sweets, fruit and a food gift pack of nearly 20 items.
In the experience of the organisers, the impact of the crisis is being felt at the food distribution. They met many new faces compared to the regular mid-year occasions. They may not look like they are in need from the surface, and there is a significant number of children. The 1,000 hot meals for that day sold out extremely quickly. That many people attended the event on the 24th. However, the organisers expected the most people to attend on the 26th.
“Some of the cooking ingredients have seen a 100 percent price increase in the last few months,” said the charity who were also forced to spend HUF 5 million (EUR 12,400) more than in previous years on fuel for food transport alone.
The charity package included other useful cooking ingredients such as yellow peas, rice, UHT milk, canned goods, chocolate and snacks.
According to penzcentrum.hu, on 25 December, the 1000 wristbands sold out quickly, but the action continued on 26 December.
During the Christmas period, around 2,000 portions of bean soup, sauerkraut and lentils were prepared for the people in need for the festive weekend. They were also able to provide 1,000 wristbands on Sunday. People were waiting for the wristbands since early morning, the Foundation’s Facebook page pointed out.
The charity foundation had organised food distribution in Eger, Debrecen, Pécs and beyond our borders. They are active during not only the festive season, but the whole year. Visitors to their English-language site can read some public information, but their full charity activities are only available in Hungarian for now.
