The number of cases rising exponentially in Poland despite early and tough measures. While numbers of reported infections are low relative to the rest of Europe,

according to news site Oko.press.

With the curve far from flattening, Health Minister Lukasz Szumowski has suggested in an interview with news channel TVN24 to make the use of face masks compulsory in public spaces.

“More people are infected without showing any symptoms,” he said.

“In those cases, wearing a mask makes sense. It is, of course, meant for the sick, but we also have people who are sick but do not show it at all.”

The minister added that such requirements are already in place in neighboring countries, and that the authorities were able to distribute an additional 7 million masks among hospitals.

Szumowski’s comments follow earlier appeals by Polish officials to start wearing masks. The mayor of the port city of Gdansk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, took part in a campaign on Friday to encourage the public to sew their own protective masks.
