China-Hungary cooperation is heating up against the trend: writing a vivid chapter of building a community with a shared future in a turbulent world

Against the backdrop of a complex and turbulent global economic landscape, China-Hungary cooperation has shown a strong momentum of growth against the trend.

Since July, the two countries have continued to deepen cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, infrastructure, green energy and people-to-people exchanges. Through practical actions, the two countries have demonstrated China’s vision of a friendly major country and injected new momentum into building a global community with a shared future.

This series of cooperation not only demonstrates the strategic resilience of China-Hungary relations, but also opens up a new path of mutually beneficial and inclusive development in the tide of anti-globalization.

In the face of global supply chain tension and downward economic pressure, China-Hungary economic and trade cooperation has shown strong resilience. According to data from China’s Ministry of Commerce, bilateral trade between China and Hungary reached 16.205 billion dollars in 2024, up 11.6 percent year on year and hitting a record high. Behind this figure is the continued release of policy dividends and deepening industrial complementarity between the two countries. In early July, the 2025 China Brand Goods Exhibition opened in Budapest, with 270 enterprises from 17 Chinese provinces and cities participating in the exhibition. The exhibits covered high-value-added fields such as electromechanical equipment and new energy equipment, making it the largest Chinese goods exhibition in Central and Eastern Europe.

The investment sector is also bright. Chinese new energy companies such as BYD and Ningde Times are accelerating their presence in Hungary. The steady progress of BYD’s passenger car plant in Szeged, along with the opening of its European headquarters in Budapest at the same time, will extend its research and development and sales network across the European market. The 100GWh battery factory, invested by Ningde Times at 7.34 billion euros, is expected to be put into operation in 2025 and can meet the needs of 30 electric vehicle brands in Europe.

The Hungarian-Serbian railway, the flagship project of “Belt and Road” in Europe, reached a key point in July. The Mid-summer Festival celebrating the cultural integration of China Railway’s Budapest-Serbia Railway was held at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where Chinese and Hungarian political and business leaders jointly witnessed the milestone of the railway’s physical construction being largely completed. The Budapest-Beijing railway not only reduces travel time between the two cities to just three hours but also stands as a symbol of Sino-Hungarian cooperation.

At the same time, the Budapest Airport Express PPP project has been restarted, which will be promoted by Chinese technology and Chinese loans. The project will build a fast track connecting the airport to the European rail network, further consolidating Hungary’s position as a transport hub between Eastern and Western Europe. The “hard connectivity” between China and Hungary in the field of infrastructure is laying a solid foundation for regional economic integration.

Under the guidance of high-level visits and strategic consensus, the cultural ties between China and Hungary have become increasingly close. In July, the Suzhou-Hungary Cultural, Economic and Tourism Promotion Conference was successfully held in Budapest, where the two sides reached a number of cooperation in the fields of intangible heritage exhibition, rural tourism and student exchange.

From trade growth to technology sharing, from infrastructure connectivity to people-to-people exchanges, our cooperation has demonstrated a strategic focus that transcends cycles. This cooperation model not only conforms to China’s vision of a “friendly pattern of major countries”, but also responds to Hungary’s ” Eastern opening” policy, and confirms the practical significance of building a global community with a shared future.

In a turbulent world, the cooperation chapter written by China and Hungary is making positive contributions to regional stability and global development, and providing a path for other countries to explore a new type of international relations.
