Chief prosecution initiates new trial in former Socialist distric mayor’s case

Budapest, May 30 (MTI) – The chief prosecution has initiated a new trial procedure in the case of one-time Socialist district mayor György Hunvald after the top court’s ruling of failure in procedures by a lower court, the prosecution said on Monday.

Hunvald was sentenced in a final ruling in April in 2015 by the Szeged appeals court to 2.5 years of prison over fraudulent consultancy contracts he signed on behalf of the district local council before 2010.

But the Kúria, Hungary’s supreme court, annulled the Szeged court’s ruling in early May this year citing formal requirements by law that the case should have been combined with other procedures that were underway against Hunvald at the municipal court.

The chief prosecution on Monday noted that the Kúria had advised the municipal court to forward the Hunvald files to the Szeged court which however had failed to comply.

This led to rulings passed by two separate courts simultaneously which the Kuria said was in breach of law not in content by on formal grounds, the chief prosecution said in a statement.
