Hungarian central bank condemns verbal abuse after angry phone call from political leader

The National Bank of Hungary (NBH) condemned “all forms of verbal abuse” in a statement issued on Wednesday, after an angry phone call from the leader of a political party.
In the call to the central bank, made just after 5:00 in the evening on Tuesday, the politician “berated” a staff member over the deadline for responding to an injunction related to an insider trading probe, the NBH said. The politician said the issues outlined in the injunction were “of no consequence” and suggested that next year’s general elections would bring change, it added.
The NBH said the insider trading probe regarded trade in shares of Opus Global in July 2023, immediately before the holding company announced a share buyback. “The NBH maintains that the law applies to everybody to the same extent, regardless of their party affiliation or position,” it added.
