Cardinal Erdő: Economic differences influence approach to migration

Vatican City, May 3 (MTI) – Europe is bent on finding a joint solution to the migration crisis, but decision makers should not overlook economic differences between EU members states when considering the matter, Hungary’s Cardinal Péter Erdő, head of the council of European Catholic bishops’ conferences (CCEE), said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of talks between Pope Francis and the CCEE, Erdő said that Hungary “has not walled off” it borders. Immigrants have always had an opportunity to enter the country legally, he said.

Erdő said that talks with the pontiff focused on topical European issues, secularisation and unity between Christians, as well as such issues as migration, economic problems, and peace.
