Cabo Verde Reiterates ‘Steadfast Support’ for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity & Sovereignty Over Entire Territory, Including Moroccan Sahara

Cabo Verde’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Regional Integration, José Filomeno de Carvalho Dias Monteiro, reiterated, Tuesday, 24 February, in Rabat, his country’s constant support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region.

During a joint press briefing with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, the Cape Verdean minister, stressed that his country considers the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom in 2007 as the only credible and realistic solution to this regional dispute. He also praised the efforts of the United Nations as the exclusive framework for achieving a realistic and lasting solution to the Sahara issue, the Moroccan foreign ministry said.

Mr Dias Monteiro reaffirmed Cabo Verde’s position, which is part of the international dynamic driven by King Mohammed VI, who supports the autonomy plan and the kingdom’s sovereignty over the Sahara.

For his part, Bourita thanked Dias Monteiro for the brotherly country’s steadfast and firm support of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and praised the opening of a Cabo Verdean Consulate General in Dakhla in August 2022.

In the same frame, the two ministers signed a partnership agreement between Morocco and Cape Verde after revisiting the terms of cooperation dating back to Cap Verde’s independence in 1975.

During their meeting in Rabat on June 8, 2022, the two ministers invited the private sectors of both countries to explore opportunities for economic exchange and investment. They called on the relevant departments of both countries to establish committees to ensure the follow-up and implementation of these projects.

Several priority sectors have been identified: agriculture, fisheries, tourism, housing and construction, vocational training and energy.
