Attention: Budapest public transport fares to increase from 1 June

Budapest residents and visitors will soon pay more for public transport, as the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has announced fare increases effective 1 June 2025. The decision, approved by the City Assembly in March, comes amid a weakening forint and the need to fund future transport developments.
What are the new fares?
Several ticket types will see price hikes:
- Single ticket: Rising from HUF 450 to HUF 500 (to EUR 1.24)
- Block of ten tickets: From HUF 4,000 to HUF 4,500 (EUR 11.15)
- 30-minute ticket: From HUF 530 to HUF 600 (EUR 1.5)
- 90-minute ticket: From HUF 750 to HUF 850 (EUR 2.1)
- 24-hour Budapest ticket: From HUF 2,500 to HUF 2,750 (EUR 6.8)
- On-board purchase: Tickets bought from drivers will now cost HUF 700 (EUR 1.73), up from HUF 600

Why the increase?
BKK cites two main reasons for the fare adjustment:
- The devaluation of the Hungarian forint, which has increased operational costs.
- There is a need for resources to support ongoing and future improvements to the capital’s transport network.
Importantly, BKK points out that the fare increase is below the current rate of inflation. After June, a single ticket in Budapest will cost the same as in Debrecen, a city with a much smaller transport network.
What about passes?
To encourage regular use of public transport, season passes remain unchanged. The standard monthly Budapest pass will still cost HUF 8,950 (EUR 22.18), allowing unlimited travel across the city’s entire public transport system. For commuters from the surrounding region, the Pest County Pass and the National Pass remain attractive options, covering most BKK services, suburban buses, HÉV trains, and certain regional rail routes.
Transition period for old tickets
Paper tickets purchased at the old price will remain valid until 31 May 2026. Mobile tickets and time-based tickets are valid for one year from the date of purchase.
Supporting sustainable urban mobility
BKK emphasises that the fare adjustment is part of a broader strategy to ensure the sustainability of Budapest’s public transport. By keeping season pass prices stable, the city aims to support daily commuters and promote the use of public transport over private cars.
