Attention! Budapest metro operation changes: here’s what to know about the new timetables

From 1 June, Budapest’s M2, M3, and M4 metro lines will run later into the night on both weekdays and weekends, reflecting the growing demand for late-night public transport in the capital. The change affects not only the metro but also dozens of connecting bus and suburban rail services.
The new schedule, implemented by the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK), means that passengers can catch the last metro trains from downtown much later than before. On weekdays—Sunday night through Thursday night—the last trains leave Deák Ferenc Square at the following times:
- M2 line: 00:00 in both directions
- M3 line: 00:03 toward Újpest-központ, 23:56 toward Kőbánya-Kispest
- M4 line: 00:04 from Kálvin Square toward Kelenföld
On Friday and Saturday nights, the schedule is extended even further:
- M2 line: 01:00 in both directions
- M3 line: 01:03 toward Újpest-központ, 00:56 toward Kőbánya-Kispest
- M4 line: 01:04 from Kálvin Square toward Kelenföld
All late-night subway trains will run at 10-minute intervals, making Budapest’s underground system more accessible during nighttime hours, Blikk writes.
Bus services to align with new metro schedule
The changes are part of a comprehensive update to the city’s transport network, with more than 40 daytime and several night routes being adjusted accordingly. The Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) has confirmed that its suburban HÉV trains and regional bus services, including the blue agglomeration buses and yellow Volánbusz coaches, will also align with the new subway timetable.

According to BKK, the updated operating hours respond to shifting travel habits and aim to better serve the needs of passengers, especially those enjoying the city’s vibrant nightlife or working late shifts.
