Budapest mayor’s office extends smog alert
The Budapest mayor’s office has extended a smog alert in the capital due to a high concentration of airborne particles, the office said on Saturday.
Mayor Gergely Karácsony declared the lowest-level alert early on Friday after pollution levels exceeded the threshold at three measuring points over the two preceding days.
His office decided to extend the alert after pollution levels continued to exceed the acceptable threshold at one measuring point on Friday, while it also took into account the weather forecast of moderate winds on Saturday evening and stagnant air on Sunday, accompanied by an increasing chance of fog which may reaccelerate the concentration of particles, the office said in a statement.
An alert is declared if the short-term effects of poor air quality pose risk to human health, particularly to the most sensitive groups of children, the elderly and the sick, who are advised to stay indoors and keep their windows closed.
