Budapest Airport begins drilling geothermal well

The drilling of a geothermal well has started at Liszt Ferenc International Airport (Budapest Airport).
During a walkthrough at the site on Wednesday, Francois Berisot, the CEO of airport operator Budapest Airport, said the well was an important step toward achieving carbon neutrality before 2030. If the project pans out, the airport can swap its gas heating for geothermal, he added.
State-owned Rotaqua is drilling the well, and Arctic Green Terv is overseeing the development of a geothermal heating system. Attila Steiner, a state secretary at the Energy Ministry, said geothermal could provide a dependable and cheap solution for heating the airport. The state of Hungary recently repurchased a controlling stake in Hungary’s main airport.
