British ambassador’s residence in Budapest celebrates 100th anniversary

The British Embassy held a ceremonial event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the construction of the British Ambassador’s Residence in Budapest. Journalists, historians, and architects gathered to recall the most significant moments in the history of the villa located on Lorántffy Zsuzsanna Street.
At the opening, H.E. Paul Fox, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Hungary, welcomed the guests. In his speech, he emphasised:
“This house is not only a venue for our diplomatic activities, but also a vibrant home. We are proud to be the caretakers of this elegant, historically significant building.”

During a discussion about the history of the Residence, Szabolcs Kordos, author of the Secrets of a City (Egy Város Titkai) book series, and Gábor Ley, former head of the ambassadorial residence, shared their thoughts and personal experiences about the building’s past and present. Afterwards, guests were invited to take part in an exclusive tour of the building, including rarely seen parts of the villa that were opened to the public for the occasion.

The British Embassy’s goal for the centenary year is to ensure that a wider audience can learn more about the building’s history and cultural significance.
