BREAKING: Wizz Air exits Abu Dhabi, halts ambitious Gulf strategy

Hungarian ultra-low-cost airline Wizz Air announced on 14 July 2025 that it will discontinue all flights from Abu Dhabi Airport as of 1 September 2025.

This marks the end of a nearly five-year effort to establish a significant presence in the Persian Gulf region and signals the airline’s strategic return to its core European markets.

Background to the decision

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi was launched in November 2020 as a joint venture with ADQ in Abu Dhabi, with ambitious plans to expand its fleet and route network in the Middle East, Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Despite initial optimism, the airline faced persistent challenges that ultimately prevented it from realising its expansion plans.

The decision to withdraw from Abu Dhabi was described as the result of several persistent challenges:

Operational difficulties: In the hot Middle Eastern climate, engine performance problems affected flight reliability and increased maintenance costs.

Geopolitical instability: Regional tensions, including recent conflicts and airspace closures, disrupted operations and reduced passenger demand.

Regulatory barriers: Limited market access and regulatory barriers have constrained Wizz Air’s expansion and effective competitiveness in the region.

Tough competition: The presence of existing low-cost airlines in the region, such as Air Arabia, Jazeera Airways, and flynas, made it hard for Wizz Air to get a sustainable market share.

Profitability concerns: These factors combined have undermined the sustainability of Wizz Air’s low-cost model in Abu Dhabi, preventing the airline from achieving profitability similar to its European operations.

Impact on passengers and employees

All flights from Abu Dhabi will be discontinued after 31 August 2025. Passengers with bookings after this date will be offered refunds or alternative travel options. Customers who booked through travel agencies or third parties are advised to contact the place of booking.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi employs hundreds of aviation professionals, including pilots and cabin crew. The company has indicated that it may offer affected employees the opportunity to transfer within Europe.

Industry reaction and market outlook

According to aviation analysts, Wizz Air’s withdrawal is not expected to have a significant impact on low-cost travel options in the United Arab Emirates, given the strong presence of other regional airlines and the dominant role of Dubai International Airport, which handles far more passengers than Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport.

Etihad Airways and Air Arabia, among others, appear to be potential candidates to fill the gap left by Wizz Air on specific routes.

Wizz Air’s plans

Following its withdrawal from Abu Dhabi, Wizz Air plans to redeploy its resources to strengthen its market position in Central, Eastern and certain Western European countries, including Austria, Italy and the United Kingdom.

The company’s management emphasised that this strategic realignment is aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability and profitability.
