BREAKING NEWS – Hungarian railway company suspends intl’s services to Western Europe, at Keleti migrants flood in – UPDATE

Budapest, September 3 (MTI) – Hungary’s railway company has decided to suspend the operation of all international train services from Budapest to western Europe, the company’s information service said on Thursday morning.

MAV has decided to suspend services until further notice in order to ensure safety of railway traffic, Mavinform told MTI.

Tickets for international trains will be valid at scheduled domestic services, the company said.

Police have withdrawn from the entrance of Budapest’s Keleti railway station after blocking all entry points for the past two days, an MTI correspondent said on Thursday.

Migrants then flooded the platforms hoping to get onto trains heading for Western Europe.

Hungary’s national police force said in a statement that it had “fully fulfilled” its obligation at Budapest’s railway stations “despite the unprecedented migration pressure”.

The statement on Thursday said that illegal migration had caused “no major problems in Hungary’s rail traffic”. Police said the large number of migrants at the railway stations had not resulted in any personal injuries or any damage to the stations.

The statement said the police force would “continue to tackle” illegal migration “moderately, taking into account every circumstance, proportionately, legally and professionally.” The police will continue to check trains and will apply the Schengen rules against illegal migrants, the statement said.
