Hungarian government wants EU help for border protection against illegal migration

The minister in charge of European Union affairs called for an end to applying double standards, urging the European Union to give support instead of punishment to member states that protect the community’s external borders and stop illegal migration.

János Bóka said on Facebook that in recent years Poland had built a massive fence system on its eastern border with EU support, and suspended assessing asylum requests under a recently passed law. Additionally, a representative of the Polish government stated that the protection of external borders must be strengthened, and illegal migrants shall not be granted asylum, he added.

Bóka said that at the same time, Hungary had developed a similar system at its own expenses but had been fined daily 1 million euros for protecting the EU’s external borders instead of receiving support.”These double standards are outrageous ,” he said.

The minister added that all member states protecting external borders and stopping illegal migration should equally receive support from the EU.
