Anti-Hungarian posters appear in Ukraine

Giant anti-Hungarian posters appeared in the area of several Transcarpathian settlements, reports Index.

Among others, these white posters include pictures of László Brenzovics, president of the Society of Hungarian Culture of Transcarpathia (KMKSZ) and representative of the Ukrainian parliament, József Barta,vice-president of the union and first deputy chairman of the Transcarpathian Assembly, Ildikó Orosz, the president of the Association of Transcarpathian Hungarian Teachers and rector of Ferenc Rákóczi II. Transcarpathian Hungarian Institute and last, but not least, the “We Will Stop the Separatists!” sign.

These posters appeared in the morning on Saturday around settlements like Ungvár (Uzhhorod), Munkács (Mukachevo) and Beregszász (Berehove), whose population is mainly Hungarian. Ukraine has been doing an anti-Hungarian campaign in their media for months now, but this is the first time something against Hungarians appears on the streets.

Hennadiy Moscal, governor of the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine, reacted on his website, claiming that the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) is responsible for this, who gave themselves away earlier with their incorrect use of language:

“The authorities are still looking for the perpetrators, although the way and the language of this provocation suggests this is the act of Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, which has already tried to generate conflict between Hungarian and Ukrainian population of Transcarpathia. They put such posters around Berehove and Vynohradiv Raion in April last year – those were in Hungarian back then. These and the previous posters were all Russian mirror translations. They have set the central office of KMKSZ on fire twice this year. These cases have been resolved and it turned they were committed by Russia. We will do our best to get the “client” of this provocation as well. However, it already turned out these barbaric acts cannot deceive neither Hungarians nor Ukrainians in Transcarpathia.”

The conflict between the two countries has been going on for months now. Péter Szijjártó and Pavlo Klimkin, Ministers of Foreign Affairs, have negotiated about these issues.
