Horrific accident: 7-car pile-up on Hungary’s busy motorway near Budapest

A serious multi-vehicle accident involving seven cars disrupted traffic on the M1 motorway near Herceghalom, west of Budapest, on Friday. The crash occurred on the motorway’s capital-bound side around the 25-kilometre mark, the National Directorate General for Disaster Management confirmed.

According to official reports, a total of ten people were involved in the collision. Several ambulance units were dispatched to the scene to assist the injured, though no information on the severity of injuries has been released so far.

Firefighters from the Bicske municipal fire department are carrying out technical rescue operations, Telex reports. Due to the accident, only one lane is open to traffic on the affected section, causing significant congestion in the area. Authorities are urging motorists to drive with caution and expect extended travel times.

The incident adds to a troubling week on the M1. Just days earlier, a fatal crash occurred near Biatorbágy, claiming the lives of three adults and one child, while three more children were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Another accident on M1 just minutes later

To make matters worse, another accident was reported Friday afternoon at the 28-kilometre mark of the same motorway, again on the way to Budapest, Kisalföld reports. Traffic in that area is currently restricted to the inner lane, while vehicles at the 26-kilometre mark are being diverted to the emergency lane.

With multiple incidents and ongoing recovery work, drivers using the M1 motorway toward Budapest should remain alert and prepare for delays.
