Chief Prosecutor proposes removing Socialist deputy’s immunity over suspected bribery attempt

(MTI) – Hungary’s Chief Prosecutor Peter Polt has requested that parliament should remove the immunity of Socialist lawmaker Dezso Hiszekeny over attempted bribery and “other crimes”, the prosecutor’s office told MTI in a statement on Thursday.
The statement referred to an investigation, the findings of which suggest that Hiszekeny, when deputy mayor of Budapest’s District 13, had asked an entrepreneur for a bribe of 5 million forints in return for the lease of a community-owned retail facility. Hiszekeny did not receive the money, the statement added.
Spokesman for the chief prosecutor’s office Geza Fazekas told MTI that there were four suspects in the case involving Hiszekeny. The investigation started last January after a report by a member of the public. One of the suspects is an employee at a firm owned by the District 13 local council, he added.
Hiszekeny was supported by the leftist opposition at the latest parliamentary election in April, and is now a member of the Socialist Party’s group.
