Szijjártó: Luxembourg foreign min ‘not to be taken seriously’

Budapest, September 13 (MTI) – Foreign minister Péter Szijjártó has dismissed remarks by his Luxembourg counterpart demanding Hungary’s expulsion from the EU, by saying that Jean Asselborn is a “lightweight” politician “bent to destroy Europe’s security and culture”.
Asselborn told Germany’s Die Welt on Tuesday that the EU could not maintain its unity unless the community excluded Hungary, a country which seriously violated European values by “building a fence against refugees of war”. He also accused Hungary of curbing the freedom of the press and the independence of the judiciary.
Szijjártó said that “patronising and frustrated”, Asselborn had “long excluded himself from among politicians to be taken seriously”.
Concerning the upcoming referendum, Szijjártó said that Hungary’s voters will have an opportunity to indicate “who they want to live together with and who they do not”. On October 2 they will give their opinion on “illegal migration, Brussels’ quota system, and on figures like Asselborn”, he insisted.
