Socialists To Have New Leaders By Mid-Summer, Says Mesterhazy

(MTI) – The Socialist Party can elect a new presidium by mid-July if the board approves the resignation of its current leaders, Attila Mesterhazy, the party’s leader, told commercial broadcaster ATV on Monday.
The presidium offered its resignation after the Socialists’ poor showing in the European elections on Sunday.
Should the board, convened for Saturday, accept the offer it will take 45 days for the new party officials to be elected. For this reason, it should be duly considered if the Socialists should really reshuffle their leadership just before the municipal elections, he said.
Mesterhazy said he did not want to give up his other post as parliamentary group leader, which is “another field of politicking”.
Mesterhazy attributed the party’s poor showing to its failure to mobilise supporters after the April 6 general election, which had probably “deeply disappointed” the Socialist electorate. Another possible reason for the low turnout, he said, was that Socialist voters did not realise the significance of the European elections.
