‘Putin’s Paks project must be buried’ – Hungarian MP calls on EU to stop Russian-funded nuclear expansion

Independent lawmaker Bence Tordai has turned to the European Commission with an official complaint, calling on the body to review its decision to green-light Hungarian state funding for the extension of the Paks nuclear plant.
Todai said on Facebook that the decision had enabled “the Russian nuclear plant investment to start” in Paks, while changing the decision would halt the project. The 2017 decision approved the Hungarian state’s funding of the project, saying it would not distort markets and that it served important goals in climate protection and energy supply.
“Since then, all fundamental arguments of the Hungarian government’s reasoning turned out to have changed, making the EC’s reasoning also void,” Tordai said. The project should be cancelled, “as it lacks social support, it is unnecessary as regards the country’s energy supply, brings extremely serious environmental and geopolitical risks, and its construction would be tantamount to total economic ruin,” he said.
Tordai said he expected the decision of the first-instance court and the EC to be both annulled. “Putin’s Paks project has been a walking dead for years. It is time we laid it to rest and buried it…” Tordai said.
