Hungary and Romania are launching a cross-border joint cultural project focusing on the legacy of Hungarian composer Béla Bartók with European Union support, Zoltán Nógrádi, the mayor of Mórahalom, in southern Hungary, said on Tuesday.
The two-year project involving the cooperation of local councils and civil groups is aimed at reaching out to young people through the arts, he said.
The 753 million forint (EUR 1.9m) project will feature a total of 20 events on both sides of the border, Nógrádi said. It will also involve infrastructure developments focused on Bartok’s home town of Sannicolau Mare (Nagyszentmiklós), where a memorial house will also be set up.

Ágnes Tóth Gróf, the project manager, said the aim was to strengthen cross-border ties between generations, communities and art forms over the coming months.
The programmes will be geared towards young people and will include exchange programmes, masterclasses, music, literature, dance and visual arts events. she said.
