Hungarian father falls ill, denied loan relief: Opposition slams insurance industry

Insurance companies and banks should deliver on promises made to help families in difficult life situations, the head of opposition Democratic Coalition said on Sunday.
Klára Dobrev told an online press conference that in the case of a father who became unfit to pay the instalments of a baby loan due to health reasons and so he should have been eligible for special treatment, the Alliance of Hungarian Insurance Companies MABISZ rejected his application for help with the excuse that the alliance was not in charge.
Dobrev said a fund had been set up with HUF 600 million (EUR 1.5 million), including a HUF 120 million (EUR 300,000) contribution by MABISZ, but when someone got in trouble, they said it was not their business to help. She added that this was appalling, and it was typical of a right-wing government entrusting banks and insurance companies with offering fair treatment.
She promised to put pressure on banks, insurance companies, and the government to deliver on their promises.
Dobrev said, “this is why the left wing will be needed in the world after [Prime Minister Viktor] Orbán, so that there is someone who deals with people’s problems instead of siding with banks and insurance companies”.
