Hungarian opposition proposes EUR 2,500 tax on private jet flights

The opposition Democratic Coalition will submit a bill aimed at imposing a special tax of one million forints (EUR 2,500) on privately owned planes per each departure and landing, Gergely Arató, the party’s deputy group leader, told an online press conference on Saturday.
According to the proposal, the revenues would be distributed among Budapest and other municipalities in the vicinity of the airport. “Those pursuing luxury should contribute to municipal expenses,” Arató said, adding that “those who can afford a private jet will have the money to pay extra”.
Read Arató’s statement below:
“Enough of the billionaire oligarchs living it up while we are in the midst of a livelihood crisis, with salaries and pensions worth less and less, and local governments being fleeced by the Orbán government. Those who can afford private jets can afford to pay more tax.
That is why DK is submitting a bill that would impose a special tax on luxury private jets, at a flat rate of 1 million forints per takeoff and landing in Hungary. The tax revenue would go to the capital, the districts, and the affected local governments in Pest County, where people suffer the most from air traffic noise pollution.
The special tax would not apply to scheduled flights, charter flights carrying at least 100 passengers, small aircraft used for recreational purposes, or aircraft used for military, law enforcement, or healthcare purposes.
The aim of the private aircraft tax proposed by the Democratic Coalition is to ensure that even the wealthiest contribute to compensating for the social damage caused by their luxurious lifestyles. Aircraft noise pollution not only causes health problems for people but also reduces property values. Those who live a life of luxury should pay a luxury tax! We on the left consider this to be a fair distribution of the tax burden!
The Democratic Coalition represents those who are fed up with private jet travel and expect the state to protect their peace and quiet. We can get them to the polls, which is why we are running in every constituency in the elections. Without the left, without DK, there will be no regime change.”
