Lane closures and upgrades on busy Hungarian motorway: What drivers need to know

Drivers on Hungary’s busy M7 motorway should prepare for temporary lane closures as major upgrades are underway between Siófok and Zamárdi. The project, led by Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Plc. (MKIF), involves replacing the existing steel guardrails in the central reservation with durable concrete barriers to boost both safety and operational efficiency.

What’s changing and why?

According to MKIF’s Facebook post, the new concrete elements will provide a stronger, safer separation between the two directions of traffic, reducing the risk of crossover accidents. Alongside the barriers, the drainage system is also being rebuilt to ensure proper water management. What’s more, unlike the current setup, the new concrete median will not require vegetation maintenance, meaning fewer moving work zones and less frequent lane closures in the future.

How will traffic be affected?

  • Weekdays: Only one lane will be open in each direction between Siófok and Zamárdi to ensure worker safety.
  • Weekends & summer: Two lanes in each direction will be available during weekends and, starting 13 June, throughout the peak summer period.
  • No major works during vacation: As in previous years, there will be no planned renovation works on the M7 between the M0 and Balatonvilágos during the holiday season, ensuring smoother travel to Lake Balaton.

What stays green?

While the central reservation will be free of plants for easier maintenance, trees and shrubs will remain along the outer edges near the fences, preserving the motorway’s greenery.

The bottom line

These improvements mean safer travel and fewer disruptions for drivers in the long run, even if the current works may cause some delays. MKIF thanks motorists for their patience and cooperation as they work to modernise one of Hungary’s most important motorways.
