Inhuman: Hungarian prison doctors torture inmates with chilli-laced disinfectant

A shocking case has emerged from Tiszalök Prison in Hungary, where several medical staff members stand accused of deliberately torturing inmates by using disinfectant mixed with chilli pepper. According to the indictment, the actions were intended as punishment for inmates who repeatedly sought medical attention, allegedly to discourage them from burdening the prison’s healthcare unit with frequent complaints.

The case involves four defendants: a prison doctor, the head of the medical department, and two other staff members, InfoStart reports. The prosecution alleges that the doctor, with the knowledge and assistance of her colleagues, applied a disinfectant laced with chilli pepper to her gloves and medical instruments during examinations.

In one particularly disturbing instance, an inmate suffering from severe haemorrhoids was subjected to a rectal exam and later catheterisation, both performed with equipment treated with the spicy solution. The inmate reported intense burning pain and further complications, which led to additional medical visits.

Another inmate, who had suffered injuries from an assault, was also treated with the chilli-infused spray—this time applied directly into his mouth, causing coughing and dizziness. The prosecution contends that these acts went far beyond the discomfort normally associated with medical procedures and constituted intentional infliction of pain.

Only one accused showed remorse

During the preliminary hearing at the Debrecen Court, one of the accused, a former lieutenant, admitted his role in the scheme, including preparing the chilli mixture. He received a suspended prison sentence after confessing and expressing remorse. The others, including the doctor and department head, have denied any wrongdoing, and their trials will proceed.
