Democratic Coalition Dobrev: Hungary’s place is in the EU

Hungary’s place is in the European Union, opposition Democratic Coalition MEP Klára Dobrev, said on Thursday, declaring: “Hungary is our country and Europe is our home”.

Noting Hungary’s 21 years of full EU membership, Dobrev said in a video posted on Facebook that the day the country confirmed its membership in a referendum “felt a little like we had arrived”.

People trusted they could expect “a decent salary and our children would have an apartment” and “life would be a bit calmer and more predictable”. “So it’s shocking that … [Prime Minister] Viktor Orbán has been talking … completely openly in recent weeks” about quitting the bloc.

While Orbán wanted to “imperil our Europeanness”, Hungary’s place, she insisted, was in the EU and she was certain that the overwhelming majority of Hungarians thought so too. Dobrev vowed to do everything possible to make sure that Orbán did not “take this life away, this opportunity for millions of Hungarians”.
