Hungarian government moves to weaken teachers’ union, the board claims

The government is trying to handicap the PDSZ teachers’ trade union through an interior ministry resolution, the trade union’s board said on Thursday.

The draft resolution published by the government on Tuesday restricted the trade union from exercising its rights, the statement said. “Its single aim is to oblige the government to coordinate with only one trade union in the sector, the largest…”

The draft resolution’s first sentence, stating that “its aim is to fulfill an agreement with the European Commission” was false, the PDSZ said, adding that the resolution actually would do the opposite. EU documents show that the government has agreed to consult with the largest trade unions, in the plural, the statement added.

PDSZ said it believed that the government wanted to exclude one of the two large teachers’ trade unions from negotiations.
