Hungary plans higher energy saving obligations for suppliers until 2027

The Energy Affairs Ministry on Thursday announced the launch of public consultations on the draft amendment on the legislation for Hungary’s energy efficiency obligation scheme (EEOS).
In order to encourage investments, the changes propose increasing the energy saving obligation for energy suppliers and retailers until the end of 2027, while leaving it unchanged for fuel distributors. If adopted, from the second half of 2025, it can provide targeted support for developments with lasting impacts, mainly in the energy modernising of residential properties and in transportation, the ministry said.
The draft proposes raising the saving obligation to 1.4pc of energy sales from July 2025, and then returning it to the current 0.5pc from 2028 to 2035. According to the proposal, the obligation of fuel distributors will not increase and may remain at the same level as now, at 0.5pc, for the entire period.
