Hungarian FM Szijjártó happy for new, US-backed army chief elected as president in Lebanon

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has welcomed as good news the election of a new president in Lebanon.

“Next to all the bad news there are sometimes good ones, too, even from such difficult regions as the Middle East. After a very long time, a new president has been finally elected in Lebanon,” the minister said in a post on Facebook on Friday. The election of a president will bring stability to a country that has gone through a lot of hardships over the past several months and years, he said.

“This is for us Hungarians very good news from the point of view that the stability of the Middle East contributes to Europe’s security and also because the peace of Christian communities and the full enforcement of their rights is particularly important for us,” he said.

Szijjártó noted that he had spoken by phone with Abdallah Bou Habib, his Lebanese counterpart, earlier in the day and congratulated him on the election of the country’s new president. The two foreign ministers reaffirmed their mutual commitment towards developing bilateral relations between Hungary and Lebanon, according to the post.
