Jewels worth EUR 250,000 seized at S Hungary border

Customs officers have seized gold jewels worth over 90 million forints (EUR 250,000) found in a car with German registration plates which wanted to enter the country at Röszke, on the Hungarian-Serbian border, the national tax authority said on Wednesday.

Over 1,000 pieces of jewelry including earrings, rings, pendants, necklaces and bracelets were found hidden under the floor panel of the vehicle, Lieutenant Colonel Éva Némedi-Varga of the Csongrád-Csanád County tax authority said. The officers have filed a report with the police on budgetary fraud and imposed a 13 million forint fine on the driver, she said.
