Thousands of teachers are missing from public education in Hungary
According to recent statistics, in two weeks a total of 1721 people will start their studies in one of Hungary’s teacher trainings.
This year, a little over 13,000 people have been enrolled (7,316 successful enrollments) in some kind of teacher training (public education, kindergarten or special education).
According to the Teachers’ Union, there are currently about 12,000 full-time teachers missing from public education, but the current 146,000 will fall by about 22,000 over the next five years due to retirements and layoffs.
Eduline writes that if all of this year’s freshmen graduate from university in three to five years, the system would still not be able to top up.
The bad news is that 1/3 of new entrants leave the career in the first four to five years.
So the question remains: how can Hungary maintain its public education the long run?
