Huge announcement: New trolleybuses to arrive to Budapest

The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has launched a public procurement procedure for 160 battery-powered trolleybuses. The plan is to add environmentally friendly vehicles to the Budapest fleet by the end of 2025.

The Municipality of Budapest and BKK would both continue the development of the vehicle fleet in the Hungarian capital. For that, a public procurement procedure has been launched for the purchase of 160 trolleybuses, Index reports.

New, environmentally friendly trolleybuses

According to BKK’s statement, they currently have no funds for the planned development; however, they have nevertheless prepared and launched the procedure. The new vehicles would have a completely low floor and air conditioning. Thanks to the built-in batteries, they would be able to travel at least 15 kilometres in self-driving mode without overhead wires.

The first new trolleybus could arrive in Budapest at the end of 2025 if the financial resources are available and the public procurement is successful.

Under the planned framework agreement, a total of 40 of the 160 trolleybuses will be ordered, in the hope that the financing of a further 40 trolleybuses can be secured under the EU programme.

The new vehicles, capable of self-driving operation, could provide modern features and equipment for the comfort of travellers, contributing to a cleaner, more liveable city, BKK added.
