Hungarian radical uses term ‘Gypsy crime’, gets fined, slams the House Speaker

The HUF 5 million (EUR 13,500) fine of a Mi Hazánk (Our Homeland) MP who used the term “Gypsy crime” in parliament, according to the radical party, was “arbitrary”.

At a press conference on Friday, Előd Novák insisted that the Supreme Court had established the legality of the use of the term in 2010. He complained that Speaker of Parliament László Kövér had “blocked” Mi Hazánk’s bill to tighten the Penal Code in light of the court’s opinion. Kövér subsequently fined Novák for using the term.

Novák further accused the Fidesz government of pursuing a “politically correct” policy.
