Official: no Christmas lighting in Budapest this year

This year, the Municipality of the capital will not build Christmas decorative lighting in the places it manages in view of the current economic situation, the Municipal Assembly decided on Wednesday.

The proposal of Deputy Mayor Kata Tüttő was supported by 18 votes in favour, 3 against and 8 abstentions, 24.hu reports. The measure will save HUF 28.3 million (EUR 69,300). As stated, it will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions significantly. The former amount will be transferred to the general reserve.

According to the Mayor’s Office, the decision means that there will be no decorative lighting in the 5th district, for example, in Váci Street between Vörösmarty Square and Fővám Square and in the surrounding small streets, as well as in Deák Ferenc Street and in the Városháza Park. In the 6th District, there will be no Christmas decorations on part of Andrássy Street, Oktogon, Nagymező Street, Liszt Ferenc Square, and in the 1st District on Batthyány Square and Clark Ádám Square.
