Foreign Minister: Ukraine stability, territorial integrity in Hungary’s interest

(MTI) – Ukraine’s stability, peace, advance to Europe, economic prosperity and territorial integrity are in Hungary’s interest, Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi told an extraordinary press conference welcoming an agreement signed between the president and the opposition in Ukraine.

He added that all participants should keep to the agreement because this is the political and constitutional condition for resolving the conflict.

Martonyi expressed hope that the series of tragic events would come to an end and peace and order would return to Ukraine.

The aim of the agreement is to ensure that the Ukrainian people should decide about their future, Martonyi said. This is in the interest of Europe and also of Russia, he added.

Hungary condemns violence on both sides but political responsibility lies with those in power.

The agreement will hopefully have a positive effect on the ethnic Hungarian community in Transcarpathia, Martonyi said. There is peace now in the area, border traffic is under control and the number of visa applications has not increased, he added.

Martonyi said Hungary would provide 2 million forints (EUR 6,400) urgent aid to help the treatment of injured people in Ukraine. The aid will reach its destination with the involvement of the Hungarian Ecumenical Charity. Additionally, Hungary is ready to receive seriously wounded victims for treatment, especially those suffering from burn wounds.

In response to a question, Martonyi said there was no need to summon the Ukrainian ambassador.
