Postal trade unions threaten strike action

Budapest, April 11 (MTI) – Postal unions have threatened to set up a strike committee, saying the employer violated the 2016 wage agreement signed last September.

The independent trade union of postal workers POFÉSZ and the union of delivery workers KÉSZ said on Monday that if a demonstration planned to be held in Budapest does not lead to their desired outcome then the strike committee would be set up.

Salaries for managers published on the postal service website show that some of their bonuses have been incorporated into wages, POFESZ head István Ádám said. Contrary to the wage agreement, those earning more than 500,000 forints per month (EUR 1,600) also received a wage increase. The increase in their case mounted to 24 percent, as against the average increase of 4 percent applied to those earning under 500,000 monthly, he added.

KESZ leader Ferenc Tusz said the workload on postal workers is excessive and this needs to change.

Both union leaders said they would be seeking a compromise agreement, the details of which they declined to reveal.
