Education system short 100 bn forints, says expert

Budapest, March 20 (MTI) – Hungary’s education system would need an extra 100 billion forints from the national budget each year, a senior economist for Szazadveg market research institute told public television M1 on Sunday evening.
György László said that the government “is expected” to ensure those funds this year, thus closing the gap between Hungary and the European average. Citing Eurostat figures, he said that Hungary was 0.3 percent below that average in terms of the education spending-GDP ratio.
Concerning the quality of education, the expert said that the results of Hungarian students were in the lower-middle range of OECD countries, but noted that there was a big difference between the best secondary schools in big cities and schools in rural areas.
