Ader commemorates deported ethnic Germans in letter to German president

Budapest, January 20 (MTI) – President Janos Ader paid tribute to ethnic Germans deported from Hungary after WWII in a letter to German President Joachim Gauck on Wednesday, marking the 70th anniversary of the deportations.
In his letter, Ader commemorated “all innocently persecuted and humiliated” ethnic Germans “expelled from the country in the name of collective guilt.”
Ader praised Hungary’s ethnic Germans whose “contributions in many areas of life have added to the riches of the nation”.
In 2012, the Hungarian parliament declared January 19 a national day to commemorate ethnic Germans whose deportation started on the same day in 1946.
