V4 say group remains opposed to refugee quotas

Prague, January 19 (MTI) – Representatives of the Visegrad Four (V4) countries agreed at a meeting in Prague on Tuesday that Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland will remain opposed to mandatory refugee quotas.

Hungary’s ambassador to the Czech Republic Tibor Peto and the interior ministers of the other V4 countries signed a joint memorandum saying that opening hotspots along the European Union’s external border is crucial in the struggle to stem illegal migration. The V4 countries proposed that migrants should not be allowed to leave the hotspots until their personal details are recorded by authorities and their identities verified.

The V4 countries reiterated that they would continue to take a unified stance on migration, adding that they would also continue to cooperate with other EU countries to resolve the migrant crisis. “We cannot accept the implementation of mandatory quotas, but we are willing to work together with the other EU member states,” Peto said.

Representatives from Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia were also present at the meeting.
